The celebrated symbol of the art deco City Club is Diego Rivera's famous thirty-foot high fresco on the wall and ceiling of the stairwell. The Mexican painter named his first US work, Allegory of California, depicting themes of industry and agriculture. This stunning mural is by far not the only art work shown by docents. There is the baluster of the grand staircase in front of the mural, with stylized figures representing a day in the life of a stock broker. The three bronze-framed elevator doors display depict pictures: above the sea, at sea level, and under the sea. Mantelpieces and furniture were created by famous artist of that era.
A few years ago the City Club was brought back to its former splendor by a painstaking remodeling process. The cafe's calfskin wall panels were replaced with authentic-looking vinyl, while the ceiling ornaments were covered with silver and gold leaf. The dining room on the 11th floor still has the authentic woodwork, and its ceiling decoration is enhanced with bronze and copper.
The artwork is not the only attraction that makes the City Club a wonderful wedding venue. Guests can use the entire club that accommodates only one private event at a time. Smaller conference rooms can serve as changing rooms or a nursery. The Club's experienced event professionals help their clients wherever they can. Elegant tablecloths, silverware, and chargers with the Club emblem are included in the rental price. Also available are audio, visual, and lighting services. The in-house florist will match the flower decoration to the wedding's color palette.
The ceremony usually takes place on the tenth 10th floor, followed by a champagne toast. Dinner is served in the elegant dinning room on the 11th floor. While the Club offers Continental food, the chef is very open to custom-design menus. Michelle told me that she is currently planning a Pakistani wedding, for which a Pakistani chef will prepare authentic, traditional menu items. While the guests feast, the dance area will be set up on at the 10th floor. Guests who don't want to dance have ample areas to withdraw to other areas where conversation is possible. A big hit among the men is the small cigar bar offering port and whiskey.
Clients can choose their event professionals from the Club's recommended vendor list or bring in their own. Member-sponsored events are offered a discount. So that you can take advantage of this savings, the Club offers a special bridal membership for a reduced rate.
