In the midst of vineyards, on the grounds of the Mitchell Katz Winery is the new Palm Event Center. Tall palms giving it its name stand guard on either side of the impressive driveway. Plants are starting to take root and bloom in their freshly prepared flower beds. It looks like a typical winery structure from the outside, yet tall, heavy wooden doors tell you otherwise. They lead to one of the grandest, most flexible venues in the Bay Area.
In contrast to the new event space, which just opened in the Livermore Valley Wine Country, is the long experience of its representatives. Clay and Read Phillips look back on extensive careers in catering and event planning. In fact, the center was created with all this expertise and the wishes of their clients in mind. The influence of Read's architect husband can be seen everywhere. Elegant, large, porcelain Italian tiles cover the floor. Acoustic panels on the walls dampen the echo and make conversation among guests easily understandable. Incorporated pink and plum colored pin lights directed to the center of the tables transform the grand hall at night. Stacks of old, authentic wine barrels give the ambiance of an old winery. Some of the barrel stacks can be moved and used as room dividers; the wall opposite the entrance consists of glass windows and doors that open to a two-tiered, terra-cotta tiled terrace overlooking the ceremony area with its wooden trellis. On the left-hand side of the backyard babbles a custom-designed fountain. To create different spaces, guide guests into the right direction, or block from view the last-minute setups, attractive room dividers created from woven willow branches are used.
The full granite bar stocks not only wine from the winery next door, but also beer and mixed drinks, and the state-of-the-art kitchen serves delicious seasonal California Cuisine. Two large refectory tables display linens, table settings, and beautiful, custom wrought iron candle holders for the clients to choose from. In contrast to many venues, the stackable chairs are attractive, comfortable, and can be used for weddings, too.
The Palm Event Center is spacious enough to host an event for 400 sit-down guests; 200 additional people can be accommodated when the doors to the adjacent Barrel Room are opened. The new venue is about 10 minutes away from the freeway and less than an hour from most places in the Bay Area.
