It took me some time to figure out why Nan's
photography is so beautiful. Of course, there are her
striking images, using light and shadow to emphasize
simple lines. But it is the quietness, the little
things in the photograph that pull you in and don't
let you go. It is not just a picture of a loving
couple but a picture where the love of the couple
spills over to you.
Her tools are simple: natural light, when
available, for creating mood; plain conversation to
bring her subjects alive, and an attentive eye for the
beauty of the individual, couple or family.
With a BA in fine art, Nan began her career
with drawing, printmaking and painting. Then she fell in
love with photography. After years as an artist
and a photographer, she is now in her prime.
She is best known as a black-and-white portrait
photographer. Often, she begins her relationship at
the wedding and then continues depicting family
history with the arrival of each new baby. She loves
children and adults equally, and after years of
working with both, she is not thrown off balance
easily.
One of the last commercial photographers who
still prints her own work, Nan offers the option of
beautiful archival silver gelatin images.
She captures most weddings with a mix of color and
black-and-white film. She has made a conscious
decision to stay with film because of her mastery of
the medium, because of its stability over time and,
most of all, because of its beauty. Negatives and
prints can be scanned and uploaded, allowing for an
optimal mix of the old and the new.
Nan is an artist, no doubt. Her talent has been
recognized in the Bay Area and beyond.
