Before Rens started Sound Trax in 1994 he had worked as a DJ, touring Air Force bases in Europe for several years. Only when he was able to purchase the top-of-the-line Bose sound system, which he considers "the clearest sound made in the USA," did he start his company. Now Rens owns 4 sound systems and two wireless mikes. He uses one mike to MC the event and the other is turned over to the guests for speeches and announcements. Rens always brings along a second system to be used for the ceremony and as backup. His music selection dates back to the Big Band era and continues up to today's latest hits. He owns more than 53,000 titles and brings at least 2,000 CDs to an event. Popular with company parties and school dances are the light show, with more than 10 different lighting effects, and his smoke machine.
Sound Trax gets most of its business from referrals and repeat customers. Rens considers an extensive consultation a must, particularly for weddings. Rens will meet personally with and get to know his clients and their preferences. He also will make suggestions about music selection and the timeline which is so important to the flow of the event. "Everybody is different -- some couples want more interaction and others less. Some want to throw the bouquet, while others want to present flowers to the longest married couple after the marriage dance," he told me. His consideration of his clients and their choice of venues makes him one of the most sought after DJs in our area.
One Bay Area wedding consultant said, "From a coordinator's point of view, we always appreciate his vast knowledge of the flow of a wedding and know that he is in constant communication with the other professionals during the event."
I was able to see Rens in action at a wedding in San Mateo. When I walked into the banquet room, the dance floor was packed. Young and old were having a blast dancing to Aretha Franklin, Madonna, and some British music that was provided by the wedding party. When Rens announced that it was time to cut the cake, the crowd responded, "No! Play another song!" He then turned up the heat on the dance floor with "Twist and Shout" and ended by promising more dance music after the cake cutting. |
