Soul University is an all-in-one, versatile band that can provide progressive entertainment beginning with background for the wedding ceremony, going on to piano for the cocktail hour, a classic jazz trio for dinner, and a full dance band for the reception and party.
Richie Begin, former lead singer and founder of "The Cool Jerks," has been a consummate entertainer and band leader for over 18 years. In addition to composing and working as Assistant to the Pastor at Trinity Presbyterian, Santa Cruz, he has been a columnist for Good Times magazine in Santa Cruz for 18 years. The name "Soul University" honors the history of soul music in America, spanning the last three decades. Richie’s energizing personality is reflected in his performance and his passion for people.
"Soul University" is comprised of band members from many famous West Coast bands, including Tower of Power and Miami Sound Machine. Their enduring popularity stems from their versatility as a source for all of the evening’s changing musical needs, from Big Band and Swing favorites to boogie dancing, to Motown and Soul tunes. Perhaps it’s Richie’s "Al Green voice" together with Lori Hofer’s harmonizing vocals that keep the audience wanting more. This is a band for all ages and tastes.
I had the opportunity to listen to Soul University at an elegant wedding at the Spectrum Gallery. Their blend of instruments and vocals kept the crowd on the dance floor all night. Even the bartender from behind the bar couldn't help but sing and play air guitar along with the band.
