Nothing looks more festive and grand at a wedding than a large band's tuxedo-glad musicians with their shining instruments. When I listened to them at an event at the California Academy of Sciences, the dance floor was constantly full. During a break I heard some people asking, "You play so well, how come we haven’t heard you before?" I saw Richard and his band again this year at the event, and the caterer told me how they had checked out several bands and couldn’t find any better. Slim’s nightclub named Richard Olsen’s Band "the Bay Area’s most versatile Big Band."

Almost 20 years ago Richard, an accomplished saxophonist, clarinetist, flutist and singer, started as the leader of a rock band. His current band has been together for over 10 years. Most of his advertising is by word-of-mouth. His clients are society and corporate people who have been enjoying his fine music for a long time. He has also played for every major hotel in the San Francisco. Besides his own band, Richard can provide combos of four or five musicians performing everything from Swing, to Latin, Country/Western, Disco, and Contemporary Rock. String combos perform Broadway show tunes, and strolling, dancing and background music. Solo instruments, such as piano, guitar, harp, violin, and banjo, are also available.

During our long conversation, Richard told me about his work and his approach. Depending on the event, he will adjust the volume so people can talk. He can easily anticipate what has to be done from his years of experience and by working with the other vendors to coordinate the entire event; for example, not playing dance music while the hot food is being served. "We are here to work together for the client the best we can, not outdoing each other" is his motto. Tuxedos are his band’s usual attire.
