Playful loops connect the photographs of Mary Lois's eye-catching and joyful creations
in the spring-green portfolio. They are fun and inspire you to be daring and
open to fresh ideas. You just have to love the variety of her bridal bouquets.
They are assembled with an artist's eye from flowers in traditional English
style, or look as if they were selected during a walk in a flower garden, or
picked from a summer meadow. They can be extravagant, incorporating garden roses,
peonies, and hydrangeas, or simple and touching like the combination of pink
tulips with light purple sweet peas. My favorite is the creation of the white
lily with a few stems of lily of the valley emanating for the center and the
whole surrounded by blue grape hyacinths and the lily of the valley leaves.
The studio location, right next to the flower market, couldn't be better to
guarantee the freshest flowers possible. In the next few weeks a small loft will
be built above the working area where it is more comfortable to receive her
clients. Mary Lois loves to meet them. She listens and
carefully watches the bride while she leafes through her portfolio. "By then I usually know exactly what flowers,
style, and color they like, I just spell it out for them. Then I like to
encourage them to be more adventurous."
Mary Lois has much more to offer than floral art. She is an artist, interior
designer, color consultant, and tabletop specialist. In working with wedding
flowers all these different trades are needed because the floral designer must
consider the space
of the venue, table decoration, and the best colors to enhance the dresses and
complement the room. I loved her whimsical designs using paper
lanterns adorned with ribbons and color-coordinated daisies and decorated Chinese
paper umbrellas that were carried by bridesmaids and later used as part of the
hall decoration. She is such a stickler when it comes to mixing the different
colors, that she even goes outside to make sure each shade is right in natural
light. "Each
detail is created with my experience as an artist. It is not the quantity of
flowers that counts, but that there is a balance of everything."
The best evidence of Mary Lois's artistry is that another well-known florist
in the area consistently recommends her. Other event professionals praise her
creative and beautiful creations, which capture the mood of the wedding so well.
"She has a wonderful personality, is very professional, and works great with
people."
